On Monday 20, we will participate in the big Conference Day and talk about our research on Children as Agents in different parts of the world.

On Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 the Masterclass led by Karel Van Ransbeeck will take place: Thinking About the Artistic Creation for Early Years – the call continues open until 30 October. In the Masterclass, Karel takes you to three shows, and you discuss early years theatre. Participation is linked to the registration, with no extra costs.

During Turning Point, ‘Small Size: Virtual House’ will be open for all to learn, to meet, to watch and to discuss online. Small Size has a new Community Builder, Giovana Del Masso, who will oversee ‘Small Size: Virtual House’ and make connections happen:

I’m thrilled to be a part of the Small Size Network as a Community Builder. I truly value the power of art and culture in the lives of children and young people. Originally from Brazil, I currently live in Ireland, while I continuously explore new countries and cultures. I work with communication, graphic design, and video editing for cultural projects focused on childhood. I’m also part of Catarsis, a cultural production company that creates wonderful shows and festivals for babies, children, and youth. Let’s dive into this exciting journey together, full of creativity!

“Thinking About the Artistic Creation for Early Years “

Small Size Network invites you to watch together three pre-selected performances for early years in a group led by Karel van Ransbeeck, artistic director of De Spiegel theatre from Antwerp, Belgium. The masterclass includes one introductory session (21 November), three shows watched together on the same day, and the final discussion the next day.

We start with an introductory session in which van Ransbeek will offer his views on early years’ theatre, based on his 30-year expertise, followed by a first group discussion.

The following performances will be watched on the same day:

Forest of Songs by Kus Kus, Slovenia and Children’s Theatre Dubrava, Croatia

The main idea of the performance is to create a sound forest theatre built from materials derived from nature. In this theatre forest plants, trees, fruits, and other things from the forest come to life in the form of musical instruments or stage sets. The main thread of the performance is the tale of a hedgehog and his best friend, the bear, based on children’s tales from Russian author Sergei Kozlov (1940 – 2010). The hedgehog and the bear live in the forest and explore it together; they meet other animals, observe nature and the changes the seasons bring to their forest. Through their relationship, the tales reveal topics such as friendship, trust, loneliness, tolerance, sensitivity, bewilderment for the world that surrounds them, and the joy of life. Together with the hedgehog and the bear, the children are set for an adventure in lessons of life, its troubles, secrets, and joys.

The Forest of Sounds is a musical-puppet fairytale for children. It is a sound “forest” theatre where the forest plats, tree branches, roots, and forest fruits become musical instruments, puppets, or parts of the stage set.

Sound Bird by Kolibri Theatre for Children and Youth, Hungary

How wonderful it is to create and receive sounds! Every living thing produces a sound – singing, squeaking, laughing, stomping, rustling. Now, it is our turn to make music together! The play is built up of sounds, colours and images. The SoundBird and the Storyteller invite us on a magical journey. The interactivity of the performance is made possible by a unique and innovative audio technology. Everything happens in real-time, thus enabling the performer to time interactions based on the audience’s reactions – just like a chorus master.

The performance was made in the framework of MAPPING – A Map on the Aesthetics of Performing Arts for Early Years funded by the ‘Creative Europe’ programme of the European Commission.

The Wind by Theatre for Children and Young, Kragujevac, Serbia

What does a tree look like when the wind is blowing, and what does it look like when there is no wind? How many children in the world right now feel that same wind caressing their faces? Are there other important things or phenomena that we cannot easily see – but feel? The Wind talks about the unbreakable connection of a human with other humans and with nature, about the balance that brings us a lot of good and joy but is sensitive and easily disturbed. Freed from the precision of words, this play addresses the youngest and young audience with images and sounds that everyone freely assembles into their own story about the wind.

The masterclass is aimed at theatre practitioners and students of performing arts or applied theatre who want to understand better the specificities and conditions of performance-making for the youngest children (0-6).

The working language will be English, and the introductory and final sessions will be held in the OPENS – Community Centre room in Novi Sad, Bulevar Despota Stefana 5.

The number of participants is limited thus, the applications for the masterclass in the form of a short motivation letter (max. 5 sentences) are to be sent by 10 October at the latest to info@smallsize.org.

The Masterclass is part of the “’Theatre & Performing Arts for Young Audiences: Building Collective Resilience’” project supported by the European Union.

Please note that participants of the Small Size Network masterclass are expected to register for the Gathering in line with the Registration Fees Announcement, which will soon be published. You can choose: daily attendance, full programme attendance, student fee, low-income country delegate fee, group discount, etc.

The Small size Network, a network of 91 institutions in 37 countries in (almost) the whole world, providing theatre and culture for the first years, had a worldwide campaign in January 2021.

At Small size, a productive exchange of professional, artistic experiences emerged with the collaboration of artists and networks such as the Assitej International or The Red Vincular, Latin American Network of Scenic Creation for the first years. The way is currently paved with “zoom, zoom and zoom again”. The interesting thing is that all the artists get an overview of the situation of international theatre groups that produce for the very youngest, and that through these projects all have experienced hope, closeness, creativity, solidarity and, if you want, consolation.

Small size days: “Space and time for little ones”

The result of the campaign was presented on the last weekend in January with the SMALL SIZE DAYS. This is a tradition of the Network, and the pandemic did not change it. From 29.-31. January 2021 SMALL SIZE DAYS offered SPACE AND TIME FOR LITTLE ONES with theatre performances, workshops, conferences and interviews of artists and short performances that were planned according to the artist’s choice and possibility. If artists and theatres were located in countries that fortunately (or still / again) had open theatres, the performances took place as usual – in presence of the audience. If theatres were closed, the program was presented via artists´ and theatres´ Facebook pages. A moment of theatre and storytelling was proposed with the same theme for everyone: Aesop THE TURTLE AND THE HARE in the respective national language. Some ten interpretations of the same fable were shared on the Small size fb pages, in many different languages and aesthetic ways.

Many wonderful international artists have dedicated themselves to theatre for the youngest audiences.  In the countdown interviews that started the 22nd of January the Small size members described their conviction on how important work we do. The program of the SMALL SIZE DAYS was diverse, not to forget the Small size manifesto that was sent to the decision makers in the member countries nor the joint work “Small  Size Artistic Action”, a five-minute video with a bird.

The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has been felt by everyone, in many different ways. Our youngest children are some of those who are most affected – babies born in 2020 who have yet to meet their grandparents, toddlers and young children who have not had the opportunity to play and to connect with their friends in nursery or school or in their communities.  The impact will be long-term and theatre and the arts have a fundamental role in enabling young children to make meaning of their experiences, of their emotions and the world they are growing up in.

Reflecting the new ways we are living and working, Small Size Days 2021 are here!

Every year, Small Size Days celebrate the wonder of arts and Early Years: bringing the very youngest children, their families and their educators together. Taking place from the 29th to the 31st January 2021, it will this year offer online performances, workshops and other activities for children from 0 to 6.

With Small size members in 37 countries around the world, from Belgium to Brazil, from Singapore to Sweden the Small Size Days will be filled with joyful activities for parents and carers to share with their young children. All activities will be organised and presented digitally through the Small size Facebook page, making a wonderful and unique World Event for our youngest children.

Small Size Network is a member of ASSITEJ. The Network focus on the performing arts for children between 0-6 years of age.
